Dwight C. Johnson served in the Marines, but retired at the rank of lance corporal and received no decorations for bravery. He was indicted over the summer after he was seen last year wearing the uniform with the improper rank and the unauthorized Silver Star, which is the third-highest honor given by the Marines for bravery. On Thursday he pleaded guilty to wearing a medal without authority -- a misdemeanor. Magistrate Judge Mary Pat Thynge said she would have fined him more -- the maximum fine would have been $5,000 -- but knew Johnson did not have the money to pay the fine. Johnson lost his job after his indictment, but has since landed a new one.

A Wilmington attorney was disbarred after it was discovered nearly $120,000 of his client's funds were spent on personal uses, the state Supreme Court said Friday in a news release. William L. Garrett Jr. used his client's trust funds to pay credit cards, get money for himself or transfer funds to other accounts, according to the Office of Disciplinary Counsel -- the court's disciplinary arm. In its disbarment opinion, the Supreme Court stated that the "theft of clients' funds is one of the most serious ethical violations a lawyer can commit." The court also said that "any sanction other than disbarment would not provide the necessary protection for the public, serve as a deterrent to the legal profession, nor preserve the public's trust and confidence in the integrity of the Delaware lawyers' disciplinary process." Garrett has not been charged with a crime.
